The strengths that have helped you to succeed are also your greatest emotional triggers, when you feel someone is a threat to you emotionally, physically or spiritually. When your EGO perceives that someone is attempting to hurt you, use you or disrespect you, it responds with anger, fear and analytical thinking so that your behavior makes sense. You experience a loss of trust in a person or situation quickly. You go into defense mode and protection mode.
Unfortunately, when you are in “trigger” mode, you are not very clear on what is really happening. In fact, most of our reactions are learned behaviors or programs that justify our defensive, angry reactions. The key to controlling the EGO reactions is to catch yourself when your emotions are triggered. When you consciously look for these triggers and identify them, you are able to determine if a real threat exists or if it is simply an old wound being hit.
